Mount Maunganui, or Mauo as it is also known, is the dormant volcanic cone which sits right at the very end of the peninsula of the town that bears its name. Thousands of tourists flock here each summer.  Mauao is also of great importance to local Maori. Known for over 600 years as a place of protection and refuge.

These days Mount Maunganui is as much for the cosmopolitan lifestyle, first-rate cuisine and local wines, as it is for its beaches. Because of the temperate climate, holidaymakers love the area all year round.
It's the place to be for everything from surf lifesaving events to beach volleyball, sandcastle building, triathlons and surfing contests, through to boat racing. Retail Therapy
If you enjoy shopping, you'll love the Phoenix shopping centre downtown the Mount. It is a busy, thriving retail area that hosts many great restaurants, cafes, boutique shops, unique souvenir shops and other outlets that can't be found in shopping malls.
Nearby Tauranga is another great place to shop and if you do like big shopping malls or for shopping on a rainy day, Bayfair Shopping Centre is located just a five minute drive away from Capri on Pilot Bay.
